Chapter Twenty Four- What Makes You Happy?

Life can be overwhelming and some days it can even bring you down to you knees. Do you ever feel that way sometimes? Some of us struggle with some form of addiction. Some of us are struggling with health problems, financial issues, loss of loved ones (whether it be those who a have passed away or maybe still alive). Some maybe taking care of elderly parents, or maybe you’re dealing with the new stages of parenthood. Or maybe there are those who are completely losing their s%#* and are just trying to make it through the day.

Whatever stage of life you’re in please know you are not alone. I have had people tell me that you can’t pour from an empty cup and that talking care of yourself is so important. I’m not going to lie my first reaction in hearing that is that I’d be happy if I could pee alone without someone barging in or constantly knocking on the door. Moms, you know what I’m talking about. The harsh reality is that you really can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s like thinking you can drive a thousand more miles with only a quarter tank of gas. Guess what, it’s not going to happen. Eventually you will have to stop and refuel, because if you don’t you will never reach your final destination. Isn’t that true with us? You can’t keep going on auto pilot and expect change. You have to take care of yourself because if you don’t, guess what happens? Everyone suffers- including you.

I want you to stop for a second and ask yourself what you like to do. Seriously humor me for a second and ask yourself "what is it that you like to do?". And don’t say I don’t like to do anything, because we all like to do something. If you can’t think of anything that you like, I really want you to think about it because I believe it's so important. Find what you love and do it. Seriously make time for it because it will benefit not only you, but those around you.

I love the sun and I love talking walks. Its like natures medicine. There’s something so healing about it. Grab some friends and go hike through the woods or take a walk around the block. Go to the lake, have a picnic, throw a blanket on the grass and read a book, or look at the clouds. There are so many things that you can do that don’t cost anything except for your time. If you don’t want to go with friends than don’t. I don’t always go with somebody. Sometime I grab my headphones and go to the lake. Other times I grab my headphones and dance in my living room. Side note yes, I really do dance in my living room, and yes, my dance moves are disturbing (I have no rhythm) but guess what? I don’t care. Do you know why? Because rhythm or not, I took care of myself. If it lifted my stress and I’m feeling better than who’s to judge right?

Do you know what I like about spring? It’s that everything is blooming and coming alive again after the cold winter. Whatever season you’re going through or whatever stage of life you are in, I promise you’re going to make it through. There are some stages of life that we don’t want to ever end right? Then there are those that we wish we have never had to experience. You woke up today. That means your journey is not over. Don’t die before you have the chance to live. Make each moment count. Remember to keep yourself filled with whatever makes you happy. You can’t pour from an empty cup, believe me I tried. Let the warm air hit your face and the sun feel on your skin. Twerk in the woods in you need to. Whatever it is, do what makes you happy. As long as you know who you are and what makes you happy, it doesn’t matter how others see you.
